Message from Deborah

Greetings Wayland Middle School Caregivers,

Big winter storms have a way of pulling people closer, connecting us to loved ones at home as we make preparations to hunker down together. Community connections also strengthen as we look out for neighbors, shoveling a walk, sharing supplies, or just waving during a stroll in the snow. I hope you enjoyed the childlike excitement of a snow day and, most importantly, stayed warm and safe!

This storm had me thinking about our own community connections. Last week our 8th graders brought us into community through their inspiring words, voices, and leadership in the commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.. Please join me in congratulating and thanking Kaleb Nigis, King Graham, James Marchione, Ibraheem Gayed, Caleb Hammond, Whitney Zylech, Georgette Isahagian, Penelope Fishburn, Jayani Norris, Manal Siidi, Camila Bernal, Aunim Alangir, Selin Yardibi, Rohan Bhargava, Alexandra Gruber, Emillie Stein, Tasnim Hussain, and Ja’vonah Sanford. We also thank the Select Chorus and Jazz Band for their poignant musical contributions.

Many, many thanks to all the behind-the-scene staff members who made this community commemoration memorable and possible including Ms. Fennelly, Mr. MacNeil, Ms. Harvey, Mr. Montweiler, Ms. Peirce, Ms. Dirmeikis, Ms. Anderson, Ms. Hood, Mr. McCormack, Ms. Vanaria, Mr. Benson, Ms. Ravid, Ms. Brewington, and Mr. Curran.

Congratulations to the WMS girls and boys basketball teams both of whom were victorious in their games against Weston last week. Their play demonstrated their athletic teamwork, sportsmanship and poise under pressure. We thank their coaches, Mr. Jones and Mr. Rivera, for building their athletic skills and their character. Come and cheer the teams on this Thursday, January 29th at WMS; the girls team will play at 4:00 followed by the boys team at 5:00 in the gymnasium.

We, along with the entire middle school staff, are committed to creating a learning community that is joyous, purposeful, and engaging for every student. Please know that our doors are always open. Whether you have questions, concerns, or simply want to share in the excitement of the school year, we encourage you to reach out.

Deborah, Courtney, and Rebecca

Conversations, Not Confrontations

About the series:
This four-session workshop focuses on building practical skills for real-life and online conversations—especially when perspectives differ or conversations feel uncomfortable. Participants will practice empathetic listening, curiosity, and self-awareness while learning from one another in a supportive setting. Together, the group will select the discussion topics for each session.

By the end of the series, participants will leave with concrete tools to engage across differences without losing connection, helping to strengthen relationships and our broader Wayland community.

This program is sponsored by Wayland Public Schools and the Wayland Human Rights, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (HRDEIC), and is made possible through the generous support of the Lydia Maria Child Fund of First Parish in Wayland.

Report Cards for Semester One

Because it is critical for you, our middle school caregivers, to know how your child(ren) are doing in school, and there continues to be a PowerSchool learning curve, we will provide paper report cards to students this year.

On Wednesday, January 28th, students will receive a report card printout to bring home. It will include a cover sheet that caregivers are asked to sign after reviewing the report card with their child. Students should return their cover sheet by Friday, January 30th to their homeroom teachers.

Portrait(s) of a Learner: Opportunity for Participation

Please see the following message and opportunities for parents and caregivers shared by Superintendent David Fleishman in his January Update.

“As we ponder the future of education in Wayland, AI and future technological advances that we are not yet aware of will likely have a major impact on the futures of our students. As a result, we think it is an opportune time to engage in a district and community-wide Portrait(s) of a Learner exercise to determine the most important skills, knowledge, and experiences students need for learning and success beyond school. We hope that it will help us sharpen our focus around what students most need and provide a blueprint for our strategy to prepare them for the changing realities of the world.”

Big Group Visioning Series

The three-part series will bring together educators, parents and community members to co-create Wayland’s Portrait(s) of a Learner. Below is a calendar of the process/meetings.

  • Session 1: Monday, February 9, 4:00-6:00 pm

Identify 4-6 core draft traits based on a series of focus groups with students, recent graduates, and parents/caregivers

  • Session 2: Monday, March 9, 4:00-6:00

Build narrative learner archetypes that reflect the range of Wayland learners

  • Session 3: Monday, March 30th- 4:00-5:00

Revise and finalize the Portrait(s) as we prepare to launch.

Participants are required to attend all three sessions as each session builds on the previous one. Please click on the button below to fill out the Google Form here if you are interested in participating.”
