Dear WMS Families,
This week’s Bright Sides are brought to us by our performing arts programs! It has been an extraordinary week for these programs, and we are thrilled to share the remarkable achievements of our talented students.
Jazz Bands Shine at MAJE
Congratulations to both of our WMS jazz bands for their outstanding performances at the Massachusetts Association for Jazz Education (MAJE) competition last week. Their dedication and artistry were on full display. The Tuesday Band was awarded a Silver Medal, and the Thursday Band was awarded a Gold Medal. We extend a sincere thank you to our student musicians and Mr. Benson for their hard work and for representing Wayland Middle School and our community with such distinction.
Drama Success at METG Festival
Our WMS Drama department also enjoyed a triumphant day at the Massachusetts Educational Theater Guild (METG) Festival this past Saturday, May 9th. Represented by a dedicated team of twelve technical theater students and twenty-eight actors, our production of The Day the Internet Died earned a Gold Medal. Additionally, twelve students were honored with individual All-Star Company Awards.
Congratulations to the entire cast and crew, and a special thank you to Ms. Lopez and Ms. Summergrad for their expert guidance and leadership in bringing this production to such a successful conclusion.
Looking Ahead: Math MCAS Testing
This week, our students will focus on the Math MCAS assessments, which will take place on Tuesday and Thursday. To ensure every student feels confident and prepared, please keep the following in mind:
-
Rest: A good night’s sleep is essential for focus and stamina.
-
Technology: Students must bring their Chromebooks fully charged each morning.
-
Supplies: We recommend students bring a water bottle and a healthy snack for personal consumption.
As always, our doors are open. Whether you have questions, concerns, or simply want to share in the excitement of our students' many accomplishments, we encourage you to reach out. Thank you for your continued support of our school community!
Deborah, Courtney, and Rebecca

WMS Drama had an amazing and enriching day at the METG Festival at Dedham Middle School on Saturday, May 9th! There were 6 other schools in attendance and the quality of the productions was excellent. There was much joy and support between the schools and all the students.
The production was led by Kelly Lopez, 9 chaperones along with Assistant Director Anna Summergrad and Tech Director George Marcincavage. The production was run by 12 Tech Theatre students and 28 actors performing. All students rose to the occasion and executed the best performance of the show! We The feedback we received was wonderful, especially for the technical theatre excellence.
Twelve individuals involved in the show were given All-Star Company Awards. However, the judges reminded reminded the production team that an award for one is an award for all, as it takes every single person involved in the production to make each person shine.
All-Star Company Awards
- Stage Manager - Zoe Adwin
- Set Crew - Kiera Jalandoni, Sophie Guo, Max LaPenta, Saaral Sekhar, Kaia Beebe, Logan Davis, Cade Hines, Isaac Pratt, Zayna Thacker
- Character of Betty - Alexandra Gruber
- Character of Herbert Stenz - Nadav Reichman-Weesner
Ms. Lopez expressed, "As a teacher, some of the most gratifying moments came offstage when our 8th graders, many of whom are doing their 8th or 9th show during their time at WMS, led the group moments before we go to 'places' with their kind words of admiration, support and love for each other, and the experience they have had together."

When: May 12, 2026
Where: First Parish, 225 Boston Post Road, Wayland – in person only
Who: For parents and other adults who live, work, worship or send their child(ren) to school in Wayland.
Cost: Free
Registration: Registration is required. Attendance at all four sessions is encouraged but not required. REGISTER
About: Ever find yourself avoiding a conversation because it feels too awkward, too charged, or too likely to go sideways? This four-session workshop is an invitation to do the opposite—with skill, confidence, and care.
Together, we’ll build practical tools for real-life and online conversations, especially with people whose experiences or perspectives differ from our own. In a supportive, low-stakes setting, you’ll practice showing up with curiosity, self-awareness, and empathy—even when things feel uncomfortable or you don’t agree.
The series will be led by jamele adams, a gifted educator, facilitator, and community peacemaker. Across four in-person sessions, participants will practice empathetic listening, learn from one another, and build trust and connection. Participants will also help shape the series by choosing the discussion topic for each session, ensuring the conversations reflect what matters most to the group.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll walk away with concrete, usable tools for engaging across differences—without losing connection or respect. Whether you’re deeply experienced in these conversations or just beginning, you’ll find a welcoming space to learn, reflect, and grow together—and to strengthen the fabric of the Wayland community.
This program is sponsored by the Wayland Public Schools and the Wayland Human Rights, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee (HRDEIC) and is made possible through the generous support of the Lydia Maria Child Fund of First Parish in Wayland.
