Dear WMS Families,
It is hard to believe that we are in the last two weeks of the 2025-2026 school year! On behalf of the administrative team, Ms. Rowley, Assistant Principal, and Ms. Speicher, Administrator for Student Services, and myself, I want to thank you for your steadfast support, your innovative ideas, and the countless conversations you have had with us about navigating the middle school experience with your students.
The end of the school year always brings a wave of mixed emotions. For some students, the excitement of summer means they might temporarily forget the routines they’ve followed all year. For others, saying goodbye is really hard; instead of talking about how they feel, they might show some anxiety or sadness. And of course, many are just eagerly looking forward to those slow, sunny summer days.
By staying tuned into what our adolescent learners are truly experiencing, we can help them navigate these natural ups and downs and finish the year on a positive note. This resource from the Child Mind Institute could be helpful Mental Health Fitness: 5 Skills Every Child Can Build. In it, you will find resources and information related to supporting our students in understanding feelings, relaxation skills, understanding thoughts, managing intense emotions, and mindfulness.
And lastly, if you haven’t yet had the opportunity to enjoy our performing arts groups, this week is your final chance for this school year. The WMS Spring Orchestra Concert is tonight, Monday evening at 7:00 PM at the middle school, and the WMS Spring Band Concert is Tuesday evening at 7:00 PM at the middle school. Hope to see you there!
The WMS staff and I are thankful for your unwavering support of our students and of our school community. As always, our doors are open. Whether you have questions, concerns, or simply want to share in the excitement of the school year, we encourage you to reach out.
Deborah, Courtney, and Rebecca

We want all of our middle school students to comfortably and responsibly use the restrooms at the middle school.
In the last week at WMS, we have seen an increase in students not following expectations in the restrooms.
We expect all students to:
- Use the restroom appropriately (ie: throwing trash in the barrel, using resources provided appropriately, clean up after themselves)
- Have a pass from class to use the restroom.
- Use the restroom only when needed and not as a time to meet up with friends.
- Use the restroom and return quickly to class (typically 3-5 minutes) so that they don’t miss out on important instructional time.
- Report to an adult if they see inappropriate behavior in the restroom.
- Remember that their actions have an impact on other students’ sense of comfort and safety in the restrooms.
- Remember that their actions, if not meeting expectations, have a negative impact on the WMS custodial staff that works so hard to maintain our building.
We appreciate the time you will take to review these expectations with your child. Thank you for your partnership.

WYFS is excited to bring our community together through a seasonal clothing swap initiative. We are currently accepting gently used clothing for all ages and sizes. Our goal is to hold two seasonal swaps, Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer, to help ensure access to essential, weather-appropriate attire for everyone. Starting the week of May 18th, a donation bin will be available at Wayland Middle School. Thank you for helping us make this effort a success!
Together, we can support one another—one outfit at a time!

It is with great honor and pride to shout out Peter Curran, our very own Wayland Middle School Art teacher, making it into the big time with his talent, creativity and hardwork.
We offer below, an excerpt from the published book What Artists Do _ TAB Pedagogy and Practice for K-12 Choice-Based Art Classes, the work and energy Mr. Curran put into his students and classroom to keep Art an integral part of public school education.

The 6th and 7th Grade Community Service Clubs are partnering with 8th grader Selin Yardibi and Project 351 to do a collection for CradlestoCrayons.
Please consider donating gently used clothing for ages newborn to twelve. There is a box in the lobby at WMS for all donations.
Thank you in advance for considering and donating!

Thank you to all that have donated books for the book swap! Although the drive has ended, any books that would like another home at the middle school, continued donations are always welcome.
